Arlington Turket Trot

ANOTHER GREAT RACE!
2013 Arlington Turkey Trot

"It's an Arlington tradition!"

Christ Church of Arlington, along with support from it's wonderful sponsors (see list on the right) held the 8th annual Arlington Turkey Trot, a 5 kilometer fun run/walk through Lyon Park and Ashton Heights on Thanksgiving morning - November 28, 2012 - 8:00 a.m. The Arlington Turkey Trot has become a family tradition for many in the Arlington community. We got some great photos! Check back here for those and for details on the donations raised for the three local charities.

What is the Turkey Trot?

The Turkey Trot Course
Our 5K Fun Run/Walk is on 11/28/13 and starts at 8:00 am sharp. The course is certified by “USA Track & Field” as 5 kilometers. It originates at the corner of Pershing Drive and N. Highland St. in Arlington. ( 5K is 3.1 miles.) - map

What's the race's mission?
The race's mission is to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy a fun, healthy Thanksgiving activity together, and to raise support for three local charities: Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH), Doorways for Women & Families, and Arlington Food Assistance Center.

What can you expect?
Participants -- young and old, human and canine -- meander through the Lyon Park and Ashton Heights neighborhoods. Some racers wear the popular race T-shirt while others wear leftover Halloween costumes, turkey and pilgrim garb, or even Christmas attire. It’s not uncommon to see adults with poultry on their heads or Santas running with their elves!

Where does the money go?
Christ Church of Arlington donates all net proceeds from the event to three local charities. Over the past five years the race has raised more than $185,000 for the charities. (Read about the presentation of checks in 2010) Funding from sponsors also plays a great roll in raising donations. If you or your business is interested in supporting or sponsoring the Turkey Trot, please contact CCA today at (703) 527-0420 or email us.
See Sponsorship Brochure.

How many folks participate?
In 2006, only 300 people were in the first race. By 2010, more than 2,300 entered the race ... and the number keeps growing! For the 2012 race, we had 3,000 people register. More than 3,000 registered for 2013.

What should I wear?
Your Turkey Trot T-shirt, of course! Get it at Packet Pick-up. Check the weather to see if you should wear a long-sleeve shirt under it. That's what most folks do. Then again, some wear costumes.

What about water?
A water station is on the route for your thirsty convenience! You also can get water and snacks at the end of the race at Lyon Park.

How fast are the runners?
This is a turkey race, not a chicken race! You can do it!

What about PRIZES!!!?
The prize ceremony will be held following the race at Lyon Park (414 N. Fillmore) to recognize the top three male and female finishers overall and the top three male and female finishers in multiple age groups. No stroller prizes.

May my dog come!!?
Sure! If your dog is well-behaved, on a leash and good around a LOT of people, you are more than welcome to bring him or her. We've had many canines do this fowl race. The bird dogs are especially good. Don't forget the little baggies. (It might be best to start near the back of the race for your dog's comfort.)

What about bathrooms?
Thanks to one of our sponsors, Don's Johns, fresh portable restrooms will be located near the beginning and the end of the race.

What about parking?
On-street parking is available in the neighborhood.

Is the course safe?
The Arlington Police Department works closely with CCA to ensure safety. Police and volunteers guide runners/walkers and divert automobile traffic from the route. Medical personnel are on call for treatment, if necessary.

For Families

Can famililes participate in the race?
Absolutely! We have many families -- and since it's Thanksgiving -- many families bring their relatives from out of town. Before the race, it's not uncommon to see large family photo opps occuring all around. Some race in their groups, but many often break from the pack to see who can reach the finish line first. It's wonferful to see children (young and old) running with their parents, and it's a great opportunity for grandparents to walk with the grandkids. It's definitely a family affair. (The 5k is 3.1 miles -- so it's a little more than 12 times around a standard track.)
Note, all registration is online this year and the deadline is November 17th. If the race is not sold out, please register at Packet Pick-up. (See dates/times above.)

Can I participate in the race and still have time to COOK for an early evening Thanksgiving dinner?!
Yes! I've done it! And it's a GREAT way to start the day. Just put your turkey in the oven early in the morning before you leave for the race. How early? It depends on the size of your turkey... check the label for cooking times. Again, the race is only a 5k (3.1 miles) and starts at 8:00 a.m., so you won't be away from home very long.
Some people run the race in around 15 minutes, others just over an hour.
